A room-by-room move-out cleaning checklist.

Empty rooms reveal everything furniture used to hide: dust lines, wall marks, crumbs in cabinet corners, and debris along baseboards. A room-by-room plan prevents you from recleaning finished areas or discovering a missed appliance ten minutes before handoff.

Before any cleaning begins

Cleaning should be one of the last tasks, not the first. Complete moving, trash removal, repairs, painting, and pest work before the final clean. Keep water and electricity active, confirm access, and check the lease, sale agreement, or property checklist for requirements specific to the address.

• Remove furniture, food, personal items, hangers, and all trash.
• Finish patching, painting, maintenance, and dusty repair work.
• Defrost the freezer if required and manage any meltwater safely.
• Set aside keys, remotes, manuals, and property items where they will not be discarded.
• Photograph pre-existing damage separately from ordinary soil.

Kitchen checklist

• Remove food, liners, and crumbs from empty cabinets and drawers; wipe interiors only when included in your scope.
• Degrease the cooktop, backsplash, hood exterior, and surrounding surfaces using methods safe for each finish.
• Clean appliance exteriors. Oven and refrigerator interiors often require extra time and may be separate add-ons.
• Wipe counters, cabinet fronts, handles, sink, faucet, and reachable trim.
• Check the narrow spaces beside appliances and the floor under removable items.
• Vacuum debris before damp-cleaning the floor.

Do not pull out heavy appliances unless the property owner and cleaner have agreed on a safe plan. Flooring, supply lines, and cords can be damaged when appliances are moved improperly.

Bathroom checklist

• Remove toiletries, shower liners, bath mats, and cabinet contents.
• Clean and disinfect the toilet, including the seat hinges, exterior, and surrounding floor.
• Remove ordinary soap residue from the tub, shower, tile, and enclosure without using abrasives that can scratch.
• Wipe the vanity, sink, faucet, mirror, cabinet front, and empty storage.
• Dust the exhaust vent exterior, light fixtures, door, trim, and baseboards when safely reachable.
• Finish with the floor and check corners behind the door.

Permanent mineral etching, failed caulk, mold, rust, and damaged finishes are not the same as removable soil. Flag maintenance issues rather than escalating chemicals or scrubbing until a surface is harmed.

Bedrooms, living areas, and closets

• Dust reachable fans, fixtures, shelves, ledges, doors, and trim.
• Wipe empty closet shelves and rods as scoped.
• Spot-clean washable wall marks carefully; broad wall washing should be agreed in advance.
• Clean interior window glass and blinds only if included.
• Vacuum carpet slowly along edges and in closet corners; sweep or vacuum hard floors before mopping.

Laundry and utility spaces

Remove lint and product residue from reachable surfaces, wipe machine exteriors, and clean the floor. Do not disconnect appliances, disturb gas or water connections, or handle hazardous products as ordinary cleaning.

Entry, garage, patio, and porch

Wipe the entry door and thresholds, then sweep outdoor areas if required. Garages and patios vary widely, so confirm whether sweeping, cobweb removal, oil stains, or discarded items are part of the agreement.

The final walkthrough

Open blinds and inspect in good light. Stand at each doorway and scan clockwise: ceiling, walls, built-ins, doors, baseboards, then floor. Check cabinet interiors, appliance interiors, closets, and behind doors. Remove supplies and trash, set the thermostat as directed, secure windows, and take dated completion photos when appropriate.

If timing is tight, give a cleaning company the address, square footage, condition, required completion time, access instructions, and exact add-ons before requesting a quote. Clear information produces a more useful scope.
